Loneliness is a public health crisis. Studies show that chronic isolation carries health risks comparable to smoking. Yet for millions of people, those with disabilities, those on the autism spectrum, neurodivergent, survivors of trauma, the elderly, the socially anxious, traditional paths to intimacy and connection are often blocked.

RealDoll Principles for Safe & Responsible Relational AI
Technology involved in intimacy should not just simulate intimacy; it should model the behaviors that make intimacy healthy: communication, boundaries, respect, and consent.
Relational AI safety includes how technology teaches people to interact with other human beings. We take our role as builders in relational AI very seriously and are looking to build a better world, not a world that reinforces maladaptive behavior or perpetuates disrespect and abuse. Intimacy AI requires its own safety discipline. Much of the current AI safety conversation focuses on model safety, agent safety, and physical AI. Far less attention has been paid to relational safety – what happens when AI participates in sexuality, affection, attachment, intimacy, and human social learning.
At RealDoll, we believe we are in a unique and privileged position to help advance that conversation. We have an established business that has been serving real customers since 1996 in one of the most personal and complex areas of human life. With that comes a responsibility to think carefully about how this technology is designed, what behaviors it reinforces, and how it can evolve safely.
That is why we are publishing our principles for responsible relational and intimacy AI. Our goal is not to claim that we have all the answers, but to help establish a framework for builders, researchers, and other stakeholders to examine what responsible innovation should look like as this category develops.
RealDoll Principles for Responsible Innovation in Relational & Intimacy AI
Consent – We build frameworks and experiences that encourage a deeper understanding of consent, helping users practice how to ask, listen, respond, and respect another person’s choices.
Boundaries and Communication – We create experiences that encourage clear communication, the establishment and respect of personal boundaries, and greater confidence navigating intimacy with empathy and mutual understanding.
Anti Coercion – We design against the idea that AI companions replace human consent, an AI companion can provide companionship, fantasy and practice, but interacting with an AI should never teach someone that another human owes them attention, affection or sex.
Healthy human relationships – We do not seek to replace, we seek to bridge the gaps in healthy human relationships, where they exist, and provide assistive tools to return back to them more fully.
Inclusion – We build for the diversity of human experience and recognize that intimacy is felt, expressed, and received in many different ways. Our products are designed with inclusion in mind, including people with disabilities, PTSD, neurodivergent individuals, and other communities that have historically been overlooked or excluded from conversations around intimacy, connection, and desire.
We seek to be leaders in Relational AI as the technology and the impact it has on humanity, and how it is used in intimacy, continues to evolve. However, we do not think one company can define what healthy intimacy and relational AI should look like alone. Accordingly, we are establishing the Realdoll Responsible Intimacy Advisory Council – a multidisciplinary group of researchers, clinicians, scientists, and leaders in relational AI who will help shape how this technology evolves. The Council will work to develop evidence-informed principles, frameworks, and guardrails for responsible innovation, grounded in data, research, and science.
Our goal is to help build a future in which intimacy technology can continue to develop safely and responsibly – without being broadly stigmatized, misunderstood, or regulated in ways that eliminate access for the people who genuinely benefit from it. We believe thoughtful standards, rigorous research, and diverse perspectives are essential to ensuring this technology can evolve in a way that protects users while preserving its potential to support connection, intimacy, and wellbeing.

Our Story: Special Effects to Emotional Technology
Realdoll was founded in 1996 in San Marcos, California, by artists and sculptors with backgrounds in Hollywood special effects. The original vision was straightforward: apply the techniques used to create lifelike creatures for film to a new category of intimate products.
What began as hyper-realistic silicone sculpture quickly evolved into something more ambitious. Our team saw an opportunity not just to create physical realism, but to build companions capable of emotional interaction. This led to years of research and development in robotics and artificial intelligence.
In 2021, we relocated our headquarters to Las Vegas, Nevada, where development, manufacturing, and innovation continue today. From this base, we refine our AI systems, experiment with new materials, and work toward a future where humanoid companions are as sophisticated as they are compassionate.
